第三部分: 阅读 (共两节. 满分40)

四. 阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分, 满分30分)

A

I was off to go back to work one evening and my two children were busy sewing things on my sewing machine. My 11-year-old daughter was, in the midst of her project, going to help her older brother in making a little cushion. I left, and in a few hours returned to find a mess in the kitchen, front room and both children sitting in front of the television.

Having had a long day, I was very short with my greeting to them and then I notice the material my daughter had used. It had been bought to make a baby blanket, and now had chunks (大块) cut out of almost every piece of cloth. Not stopping to listen, I exploded at the children and explained how angry I was at what had been done.

My daughter listened to me sheepishly, not trying to defend herself at all, but the pain could be seen written across her face. She went back to her room quietly, and spend some time in there alone before she came out to say good night and once again apologize for the mistake she had made.

A few hours later, as I was preparing to go to bed, there on my bed lay a beautiful, little cushion made out of the forbidden cloth, with the words “ I love MUM”. Alongside it was a note apologizing again, and the innocence in which she had taken the cloth.

To this day, I still get tears in my eyes when I think of how I reacted and still feel the pain of my actions. It was I who then sheepishly went to her and apologized for my actions. I display with great pride the cushion on my bed, and use it as a reminder that nothing in this world is greater than a child’s love.

People who show confidence really seem to have it made. They seize more rewarding careers, keep good relationships, and just seem to do everything with more styles than the rest of us.

So what’s the secret? There isn’t one. Self-confidence is a skill and habit that anyone can learn to develop. And although people who are raised in an encouraging environment with confident role models have a head start in self-confidence development, we all can learn to become more confident at any age.

Try these simple tips for practicing and increasing your self-confidence levels:

Dare to fail. Anybody who’s out there bravely performing is going to fail repeatedly. If you are not failing, you are not trying. So don’t take failure too hard or too personally. Just learn to deal with it and use its lessons to keep improving.

When in doubt, pretend you know what you are doing. Because, if you are confident of your abilities, by the time you have done it, you will be experienced.

Dress for successYou don’t have to be beautiful to be confident. Make the most of your own unique physical characters and weaken your disadvantages.

Listen to yourself. You are the only person who knows what’s right for you. Don’t put others’ opinions above your own inner voice.

Build a confident vocabulary. Stop putting yourself down (使你出洋相) and give up continually blaming your tiny weaknesses. Learn to show up your strong points and the world will learn to see and celebrate them with you.

Pass on the praise. Praise others for their virtues and strength. This practice will not decrease your confidence, but help increase it.

46. The passage is written mainly __________.

   A. to explain the definition of self-confidence

Go ahead and have that second cup of coffee—or third, or fourth. A study published on Monday shows heavy, long-term coffee drinking does not raise the risk of heart disease for most people.

“We believe this study clearly shows there’s no link between coffee drinking and heart disease,” said Esther Lopez-Garcia, an instructor(讲师) in the School of Medicine at the Universidad Autonomy de Madrid in Spain, who worked on the study.

Researchers also found no link between heart disease and how much caffeine, tea or decaffeinated(无咖啡因的) coffee people drank. “But this does not mean that everyone can be overloaded with coffee,” said Rob van Dam of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. “ We can’t exclude(排除) the link between coffee drinking and the risk of heart disease in small groups of people.

The Harvard and Madrid teams used data from two ongoing studies—the all –male Health Professionals Follow-up Study and the all –female Nurses’ Health Study. Volunteers in both studies fill out questionnaires(调查问卷) about their diet, exercise and other health habits and have regular physical exams.

The researchers found more than half of the women and 30 percent of men who drank much coffee a day were more likely to smoke, drink alcohol and use aspirin(阿司匹林), and were less likely to drink tea, exercise or take vitamin supplements. But once these factors were accounted for, there was no difference in heart attack risks between the very light and heavy coffee drinkers.

51. What is the purpose of the passage?

   A. to warn people against drinking coffee

   B. to analyze the chemical components of coffee

   C. to advise people to form the habit of drinking coffee

   D. to show most people can drink as much coffee as they like

   A. Drinking coffee heavily   B. Drinking much tea

   C. Smoking and drinking alcohol    D. Taking vitamin supplements

53. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?

   |A. It is not good for some people to drink much coffee.

   B. Drinking tea cannot cause heart disease

   C. Decaffeinated coffee is healthy

   D. Researchers had new findings.

54. We can learn from the last paragraph that people who drink much coffee a day are more likely to _________.

  A. exercise   B. drink tea   C. drink alcohol    D. take vitamin supplements

55. What can be learned from the passage?

   A. coffee drinkers like vitamins      B. Coffee drinkers often drink alcohol

   C. Volunteers in the two studies often have checkups

   D. The Harvard and Madrid teams carried out two studies.

Can money buy happiness?

Different people have different attitudes toward money. Some people think money is the source of happiness. In their opinion, everything in the world can be bought with money. Only when you have enough money can you taste delicious food, buy luxurious cars and magnificent houses. Therefore , they think money is the basis of happiness.

However, others think that money is the root of all evils. Owing to the keen hunger for money, people do illegal things and even hurt others. For example, some people fight against each other for money, some kill others for money. All these evils are under the control of money.

In my opinion, money can bring us misery as well as happiness. Only when your money is made through your honest efforts, can you lead a decent life. If we use money to help the poor and homeless, we will enjoy the true happiness.
